A UML tutorial

A software vendor provides a quick and simple UML tutorial here . It covers several of the popular UML diagram techniques, what they look like, when to use them and so on.

If you are branching out from flow charts and swim lanes this could be useful for you.

Diagrams are communications tools and UML is a bridge between technical people – programmers and the like, and business people, often mediated by an architect or business analyst. UML is useful because the standards are universally used, most people can understand what they are seeing if it is in a UML format.

Of course once you master these diagrams you’ll modify them to suit your purposes, but you should always remember who your audience is, and that there are usually both technical and non-technical people looking at your documents.
